Just won one of these on ebay. Mine has the OB nib. This will be my first "vintage" pen, and my first pen over $20.00 . Every other pen has been a Chinese model, though for the money, they are all great too. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Early, I had a problem with my new Jinhao X159. Its nib slit was too tight. The ink did not easily flow and was a bit scratchy. After I watched your video, I gaped the nib with a sheet of paper, and suddenly, it worked. Now my Jinhao works perfectly; it is wet and smooth. Thank you so much.

Well I ordered one after watching this and have had my own issues with it..... they shipped it to somewhere in texas instead of florida. It says delivered and looking into it, the tracking says signed for by XX in Texas.... No idea whats up with it. Cant seem to get a reply from anyone either.

I'm no chemist so i can't actually explain why, but lower concentrations of isopropyl are usually better solvents like 50 to 70 percent, think it must have something to do with the alcohol being 'dry' and the water being 'wet' that makes it work better.

Should you leave pens inked or should you only ink them as you Use them, I know it will depend also on the ink..saw the bayside video..general opinion…

I have a couple of nibs that I believe Mr Lax could rescue. I moseyed over to his website with the hopes I could contact him in order to find out how I could make arrangements to avail myself of his services. I was not able make contact through his website. Is he no longer accepting pens for repair?

I tried a sample of MV brown sugar, it worked quite well. Though personally I will not be using it again, because as a fountain pen using plumber I found it quite awkward to have brown ink stains on my hands. Thanks for the videos ! You are definitely my favorite fountain pen channel!

I finally purchased one of these pens off Amazon in an Extra fine but after cleaning and inking it with noodler's Bay State blue it writes extremely wet making this extra fine pen write like a broad. It writes way to wet. How can I fix this.

Yea, but that blue is on another level. I compare all other blue inks to it.

I have a fountain pen with a 2mm broad nib. When I start writing , it works fine, but after some time the ink starts thinning until it only flows in a thin line from the slit in the nib. I don't know what could be the problem, any suggestions?

always been really fascinated by fountain pens and such, never bought one, but man getting one of those trash pens as a first pen would have turned me off. Creating those pens is basically gatekeeping xD

The Pilot Metropolitan was my first fountain pen and served me well during high school, I don’t really like the cap detent, for me, it never really stayed on well, and the posted cap doesn’t really stay on well for me personally, I did appreciate how you could write on thinner paper without any major feathering or bleeding (as opposed to my MB 146), I sort of wish I had picked up a Lamy Safari first, since it posts easier and more securely, and writes just as well.

What works really great for geting stain off of your hands believe it or not WD-40. I keep a can around all the time. It works wonders for stuff like that as well as like oil-based paint

I am a year late, but - huge agree with your thoughts on filling bottles to the brim! That's why, when you look at soda bottles or jugs of milk, they always have an air bubble. Liquids expand in the cold and the heat. I'm shocked that some ink companies don't take that into consideration - what if some poor customer leaves a bottle in their ice-cold garage, and comes back to a horrible mess?

IPA is perfectly skin safe. It's the alcohol used in alcohol swabs used before injections/minor (office) surgical procedures.

Really ingenious way of testing! This channel is the most scientific of all fountain pen channels! As of a casual fountain pen user, I will probably not do any substantial changes to my pens, so the numbers for the modified pens do not give me an idea, other that, obviously, an out-of-the-box Noodlers's Ahab will not do better than what is shown here. A very small suggestion, if you ever want to do an update of this video, maybe you can measure the weight you put down while writing with the strongest force to get the largest flex from each pen. I suspect that for this reading, the Ahab would have the highest value.

I wish I had seen videos like this or read more Reddit comments before I bought my first bottle of Baystate Blue. It's a beautiful color, but the wetness combined with the staining makes it difficult to use. I've had the bottle for around 8 years now and have barely used a quarter of it. And every time I do use the ink, it creates a huge mess. Gorgeous ink, terrible experience.

I would have tried peroxide since it's UV activated. Or can those pens be cleaned with peroxide?

Hi! What grease would you put on the threads of fountain pens? Would it be different if it’s metal on metal threads, versus plastic on metal?

Very, very few flexible nibs can flex safely beyond 2 mm. I would not push any of these nibs to the nearly 3 mm you have. This can cause work hardening of the nib which causes stress fractures when pressure is applied, which causes these nibs to crack.

If you'd used a very fine nib, some blotter paper, or both, you wouldn't have needed to use a non-fountain pen.

Some vintage flex fountain pen nibs are so soft that you would destroy them with the amount of pressure you're using in this video. It's not a good idea to use a one size fits all approach to testing how flexible these nibs are by using the same amount of pressure when writing with them. Some vintage nibs are able to withstand a considerable amount of pressure, and others aren't.

I have a 14k ultra flex nib from FPR and I have a still ultra flex from them and I can tell a huge difference in softness

I have three the Amber Marine, blue and silver/black. They are lovely and write so smoothly.

i feel like trying yellow in in the pen would be the ultimate test on if it all got flushed out
